IU COVID DOMESTIC TRAVEL GUIDANCE
Effective June 1, 2020, until further notice

The following guidance for travel within the United States is in addition to existing IU travel policies; they supersede existing policies only where there is a specific conflict. The guidance can be expected to change on short notice, as the COVID health situation evolves or federal and state guidance changes.

International travel, both outgoing from the U.S. and incoming to the U.S., is covered by guidance issued by the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs.

IU-SPONSORED DOMESTIC TRAVEL

  • Only essential travel is permitted. “Essential” means necessary for an individual to perform her or his core IU responsibilities or necessary for the core functions of the university to include recruitment and development; necessary that the travel or event occur during pandemic health and safety conditions; and there is no effective alternative to travel. This includes faculty, staff, and students, as well as external visitors.
  • Travel must be approved by an executive vice president, vice president, associate vice president, chancellor, dean, or their designee.
  • Intercampus travel to IU campuses is permitted; however, other means of conducting business, such as teleconferencing, are strongly encouraged.
  • Travelers must follow local restrictions and CDC travel guidance CDC advice for travelers.
  • Travel to large meetings and conferences is prohibited.
  • All travel arrangements must be made through Travel Management Services designated agencies.
  • Additional guidance related to laboratory research may be found in the Research Restart Committee report.

NOTE REGARDING DOMESTIC PERSONAL TRAVEL AND WORK-RELATED TRAVEL SPONSORED DIRECTLY BY A THIRD PARTY

  • Work-related travel in furtherance of IU’s research, educational, or clinical missions, but which is directly reimbursed by a third party and not as part of a grant to IU or IUF, is considered personal travel for the purposes of domestic COVID-19 travel guidance.
  • In view of the prevalence of COVID-19 in many areas of the US, including areas that are COVID-19 “hot spots,” IU strongly recommends limiting the amount of personal travel.
  • Before traveling, individuals should check local pandemic conditions at their destinations, travel restrictions at their destinations and along the way, and CDC advice for travelers.
  • If possible, it is best to avoid crowded transportation hubs and destinations where it will be difficult to maintain basic health precautions, such as social distancing.
